Grafton, Mass. - It was a game of almosts at Grafton High School Thursday night. The Leicester girls basketball almost saw a road win slip away, and Grafton almost pulled off a memorable comeback.
Trailing 25-17 after three quarters, the Indians (1-3) pulled off a 11-1 tear and pulled ahead 28-26 with just two minutes left in the game.
That's when Leicester's (2-2) Rachael Meyers took over, scoring the game's final four points. After hitting consecutive free throws, Meyers had the ball for the game's final possession, drove to the right and put up a shot, scoring with two seconds left on the clock.
"My heart is beating so fast right now," said Meyers. "Coach was just yelling, 'Drive to the hoop!' So I said, 'OK, let's give it a shot."
Meyers led the Wolverines with 11 points. Amanda Stanick had eight points, and Charlotte Meyers scored five.
"Rachael is just an aggressive player. She's the type of kid that wants the ball in her hands in the last few minutes," said Leicester coach Tara LeBlanc.
For the Indians, Meg Driscoll once again led the team with 14 points, and Nikki Murphy chipped in seven.
Grafton coach John Mulryan pulled back his press defense and as a result, Leicester got fewer open shots and drew fewer fouls in the second half.
"Unfortunately we didn't play well in the first half. The ball didn't fall for us," said Mulryan. "But we certainly showed in the second half that we can dig in defensively and chip away."
The Wolverines led 20-9 at halftime, but the Indians won the third quarter 8-5. In the fourth it was all Grafton until the final 93 seconds.
"The girls showed me that they can play that way. We just need to put a full game together," said Mulryan.
The Indians return to the floor Tuesday, Dec. 27 when they host Douglas at 7 p.m. The Wolverines host Millbury at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29.
