LEICESTER, Mass. — Continuing the ongoing community fundraising efforts for the Leicester Public Library project, students at Leiceseter High School have raised a little over $700 more for the fund by holding a TV raffle.
Since October, the Leicester Public Library Expansion Campaign has been collaborating with the facility's main users, students, to help raise money for the potential renovation and expansion. Trustees hope to bring the library into the 21st century so it can better serve the community and be more accessible for all residents.
Through various fundraising efforts, Leicester Schools have been helping raise money to support the project, and the LHS National Honors Society recently raised $710 through a raffle for a big screen television.
Principal Tom Lauder said he felt it was nice that the students were able to have a part and do a little work for for the campaign, because "they have a dog in the fight and can feel like they are part owners of the library."
Furthermore, as young scholars, the students will benefit from the important educational resource.
"I'm excited that that the students will have a state of the art library to access beyond school hours," said Lauder.
In December, Leicester High School students also came out to support the kick-off of a four-week fundraiser from Cumberland Farms, which donated 20 cents from purchased beverages toward the expansion campaign.
"We have a community service requirement, but also a philosophy that you should give back to the community, and I think that's a part of it, too," he added.
