LEICESTER, Mass. — The former Liecester Middle School teacher facing charges that include the rape of a minor under 14 years old will go to a trial by jury on July 11 at Worcester Superior Court.

David Gilman, 44, of Brookfield, will face three counts of aggravated indecent assault and battery, and one count of aggravated rape of a minor under 14 years-old.

Gilman pled not guilty to the crimes at his arraignment at East Brookfield District Court in March of 2010. During his arraignment, Gilman was ordered to surrender his teaching certificate and passport, and to not to leave the state. The judge also ordered that Gilman could not have unsupervised contact with children under 16.

Now almost two years after the arraignment, at a pre-trial conference on Monday Judge Janet Kenton-Walker decided the case was ready for a jury, and set the trial for July 11.

Last month, Kenton-Walker decided to deny a motion for suppression of evidence collected from two laptops.

The teacher was first arrested on Dec. 18, 2009 after allegations from a student's mother were brought to the Leicester Police Department's attention. School officials also offered information on the allegations.

Gilman had spent more than a decade teaching at Leicester Middle School for its sixth, seventh and eighth grade music program.

The teacher was immediately suspended, pending investigation and trial.

If convicted of his charges, Gilman could face up to life in prison.
